Reflections Upon Autumn, Horse-drawn Carriages, River Valley and Sunday Bridges

Last weekend was the Fall Art Gallery Walk here in town.  We began our gallery tour with a horse-drawn carriage ride which travelled the area wherein the galleries are located.  We just so happened to be in the right place at the right time and were the first to board the carriage.  Loving it!!

The team and carriage with passengers are reflected
in a shop window, above, as we stop in traffic.

Two different varieties of Mountain Ash.
Their differences are obvious in the fall.

Our loop through the downtown area took us to this road overlooking the river valley (North Saskatchewan River) where we could get a good glimpse of the autumnal changes and a bridge spanning the river.

Our carriage was drawn by these two handsome Norwegian Fjords.  Neither the traffic nor the adoring fans seemed to bother these two.

For more reflections and bridges, pop over to Weekend Reflections and Sunday Bridges.

Coming soon, photos taken during the gallery tour.  I hope you'll pop back here for a visit to see the spectacular art in our local galleries.

The Beauty of the Jaguar

The other day we discovered this beauty parked next to us.  Of course I had to take photos to share with Weekend Reflections!!

Sunday Bridges

These photos of the High Level Bridge were taken from the Alberta Legislature Grounds last weekend.  The trees were then in their fall finery which, since the wind of the last two days, has recently departed to join the others underfoot.

For more beautiful bridges, give San Francisco Bay Daily Photo a visit as Louis hosts this weekly meme.

Fall is but a rest, a pause in time to ready nature for a sleep that will again be awakened in the tiny buds of spring." (copyright Shirley Martin, 2013)

There are so many things I am blessed with and for which I am thankful:  family, faith, friends, freedom, employment, a roof over my head and meals on the table, opportunities and this wonderful country and everywhere I look beauty abounds.

So wherever you may be, I hope the goodness and beauty of this world might offer peace and hope, for "fall is but a rest, a pause in time to ready nature for a sleep that will again be awakened in the tiny buds of spring." (copyright Shirley Martin, 2013)   The fleeting beauty of autumn is forever captured here.  The following photos, with the exception on the one noted, were taken at the Legislature Grounds on Saturday, late afternoon.

The only photo in this set taken along 97 street of the Amur maples.  Gorgeous!

“The tints of autumn...a mighty flower garden blossoming under the spell of the enchanter, frost.”

“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

“I loved autumn, the one season of the year that God
seemed to have put there just for the beauty of it.”

“The magic of autumn has seized the countryside;
now that the sun isn't ripening anything
it shines for the sake of the golden age; for the sake of Eden;
to please the moon for all I know.”

“Fall has always been my favorite season.
The time when everything bursts with its last beauty,
as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”

“Her pleasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn--that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness--that season which has drawn from every poet worthy of being read some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.”

“Two sounds of autumn are unmistakable...the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street...
by a gusty wind, and the gabble of a flock of migrating geese.”

“There is something incredibly nostalgic and significant about the annual cascade of autumn leaves.”

“Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!”

“Delicious autumn!
My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird
I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”
― George Eliot

“At no other time (than autumn) does the earth let itself be inhaled in one smell, the ripe earth; in a smell that is in no way inferior to the smell of the sea, bitter where it borders on taste, and more honeysweet where you feel it touching the first sounds. Containing depth within itself, darkness, something of the grave almost.”

“No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace
as I have seen in one autumnal face.”

“Autumn...the year's last, loveliest smile.”

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket
than all the other seasons.”

“Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence.
Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance.
Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence.
Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.”
― Yoko Ono

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!!

Discovering the River Valley: Paradise for Dogs and Humans Alike

A trip to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park on Sunday was soothing, serene and yet stimulating.  The air was crisp, the sky ever so blue (once the sun decided to join us), the leaves crunched underfoot and the air smelled of the sweet fragrance of autumn.

It seems the skies are so much bluer this time of year.

The brilliant yellow leaves and stark white bark of birch shine brilliantly.

And every here and there the vivid tones of red and orange dot the forest.

Singles, families and many dogs of all species stroll, run, and trot these trails. This is an off-leash park. (my own dogs are not social creatures so this would be a very bad idea).

The footbridge crosses the Fort Sasktachewan River leading to Hawrelak Park.

Ah, there's nothing like a swim or a game of toss the stick to make a dog incredibly happy.  To see them chase through the shallow water at the river's edge, tongue hanging out, ears perked to attention and tails wagging; how could you not smile and revel in their enjoyment?

The Edmonton Rowing Club is situated at this park as well. There's a boathouse, dock and whatever facilities a boater could desire.  There isn't a spot at this location to launch a motor boat, though.  That's another locale somewhere along this river.

A more perfect escape from the hustle and noise of the city you'd be hard pressed to find.

Do you have the perfect escape destination?
