You Need a Sense of Humour When It's Minus 10 Celsius Early November

Great cartoon - i don't mind shivering as long as there's no snow on the ground. At least it's sunny. Shirley - is there any way of saving a big pot of outdoor mums over the winter? Would they grow again if I cut them back and covered them up and left them in the unheated garage? Probably not... Thanks!

Sheila, it's funny that you should ask about outdoor mums today as I just read an article about the very thing written by Jim Hole of Hole's Greenhouses in St. Albert. He recommends bringing the plant in the house over the winter as it will not flower outside the second year (if it were to survive) otherwise because the seasons here just aren't long enough for a mum to develop a flower bud to fruition. So, bring it indoors, perhaps spray it with an insecticidal soap, including the soil, and place in a sunny location. Treat it like a houseplant and then, in May, set it out again. It should flower for you again in the fall. Hope this works for you. I hope you will let me know how it goes.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. actually this large plant came from Holes to my daughter's workplace and then they were being given away so she wanted me to take one. i have brought it home and haven't sprayed it but many of the tiny blooms seem to be drying up - should I just clip them off at the top? there are some buds which haven't bloomed yet...Thanks so much for your help. I really would like to see this through the winter and have the perfect spot for it. Thanks Shirley!

We've been blessed with a bit of warm weather yet, but the teeth-chattering days are definitely not far off! Love the cartoon!

Yes, just deadhead as per usual. Start fertilizing again in May when you see new growth.
