What a Relief - We Got Rain and Ontario's Fire Rainbow

This morning I awoke to the sound of thunder.  Looking outside, as I let the dogs out to do their thing, I smiled in relief to see a heavily clouded sky, wet deck, and the promise of more of the same.  Yay!  We were in need of moisture and the cooling effect that accompanies it.

In other news, Sunday, July 9, Matthew Haskill, an amateur photographer, caught a rare spectacle in the skies above Toronto.  Dubbed a fire rainbow, his photo is growing in popularity with likes and shares across Facebook.  It is one of the most talked about phenomenon of late, as shared in this The Star article.

For two months of the year, here in Canada, the sun sits at just the right angle, 58 degrees above the horizon, to create a "fire rainbow".  Certain conditions must exist as well, including horizontal cirrus clouds in a wispy and high formation.  If the cloud contains the right kind of ice crystals, and the sun is at the correct angle, its rays reflect off the crystals creating the illusion of fire in the sky.

Oh, good for you! So glad to hear rain is actually falling somewhere. The fire rainbow is amazingly beautiful. What a wondrous phenomenon.

This has certainly been a year to test a gardener's mettle, hasn't it? I guess it's back to the hoses for me today.

Glad to hear you got some rain. It certainly does cool things off as well as nourish the gardens.

That fire rainbow is spectacular.

We got much needed rain here also, and temperatures finally below 100 degrees. Never heard of a fire rainbow before. Very beautiful.

Well again I've learned something new on your blog Shirley - I'd never heard of a fire rainbow - what a magnificent picture. We were at the UofA in the Quad.

First off I want to say great blog! I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I've had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Kudos!

Dear Anonymous, first off, thank you. I love to receive comments from all my readers!

As far as writing goes, sometimes it comes easy and at other times I have to do something to get in the mode. Sometimes it is as simple as relaxing and staring/enjoying my garden and at others it is listening to music. Still, for others and sometimes for myself, meditation helps. I think your particular struggles in focusing at the beginning are the same that we have. It is a process, after all.

Karen,

It has been a bit of a challenge this year for gardening. Last year it was rainy more often than not, but this year is actually probably more the norm with heat and dry weather. The hose is the gardener's best friend right now! :)

Flower Lady, we are all so glad for the moisture. Lately there have been wild fires in the northern part of the province but today the winds shifted and our area is cloaked in smoke. It may smell good, like wood burning, but it is difficult for those with asthma and other respiratory ailments. In the news, though, it looks like rain is but a day away and our world will be washed clean of smoke again.

Sheila, isn't it magnificent? I'd never heard of them prior to this occasion either! It would be fabulous to witness in person!

Arija, nice to see you here again!! How's the weather in Australia? We've been hotter and drier than usual but that looks to let up a bit over the weekend.

Everyone, thanks for popping by! I love to hear from each and every one of you! :)

What a phenonemal shot! And this is something I never knew occurred. A rainbow is pale in comparison, isn't it?
