Edmonton Queen the Riverboat

I was rather disappointed to discover the Edmonton Queen is actually a rather new riverboat, meaning no exotic history dating back to the founding of the city of Edmonton.  The construction of this riverboat was completed in 1995 and it actively began its service on the North Saskatchewan River in July 1996.   The above photos were taken using my iPhone (again) while it paddled down the river a couple weeks ago.

Some facts about the riverboat:

It weighs 750.49 GT

Length:  169 feet 11 inches (51.79 m)

Paddlewheels x 2 - 18 rpm

Speed 9 knots (17 km/h or 10 mph)

Capacity:  about 375 passengers

It has a 12 member crew.  

The Edmonton Queen sails four days a week; three cruises a day, one of which being a dinner cruise.  

To cruise on the Edmonton Queen is on my wish list.  Perhaps someday.  It doesn't even have to be a dinner cruise.  Wink wink, nudge nudge.  (I hope you are reading this hon.)

Watery Wednesday in the Mountains

Today's Watery Wednesdays photos were taken the weekend of Canadian Thanksgiving at Waterton Lakes National Park in southwest Alberta, Canada.  It was cool, windy and wonderful!

Nature's Fall Kaleidoscope

Near Ft. McMurray last week, you can see the golden hues of autumn brightening the landscape.  I particularly like the "U" bend in the river in the last photo.  It's Watery Wednesday again.  You can see more watery scenes when you visit here.

Watery Reflections, Shadows and a Bear!!!

These photos were taken near Fort McMurray August 24, 2011.  I love these softly muted reflections of the clouds in the water below.  The last two photos were taken from a safe distance as this black bear investigated the garbage dumpsters near a local hotel/motel in Fort McMurray.

Lac La Biche in Northern Alberta

This sunset shot was taken by my husband at Lac La Biche in northern Alberta.  If you recall, last week's Watery Wednesday photo was of the same location but looking directly at the sun as it set over the lake.  The reflection was exquisite!

The Advantages of Different Perspectives

A beautiful day offered the chance to get outside with the camera again.  I love glimpses like this, looking through the ninebark and the amur maple towards the waterfall and pond.  A new perspective, rather than straight on, shows how important it is to implement different vistas in the landscape.  A new angle presents a totally different view.

 From different angles in the garden, the view is slightly different which is a great treat for the eye.

Watery Wednesday...pond

I was talking to my neighbour across the back from us and discovered that she loves to peer through the fence that divides our properties to see what's new in our garden.  So, I did the same and this is what I saw.  This stream and pond were developed a couple years ago and the perennials are filling in nicely.  Keep in mind that it is spring here and things are just starting to come into their own.  Everything is a little late this year, but it's coming.

Spring Blooms in Vancouver

Oh the beauty you will see in Vancouver this time of year!  My son took these photos while on his lunch break.  Can you imagine free flowing fountains, trees in full bloom and green grass?  Well, some of you can, I'm sure.  But here in Edmonton it's a whole other story. 

My son sent these photos the other day.  Further proof of the benefits of living in his favourite city.  Here in Edmonton, we still have snow.  It has been melting but it is a slow process.  If you can recall the size of our snowbanks, you'll understand.  (See my post We're in Deep, Snow That Is to get an idea of just how much snow we had in January.) Better slow, though, than a fast melt which could lead to flooding. 

 Time to get our eyes wet, as the saying goes over at Watery Wednesday.  Each Wednesday people from across the world link their photos of gorgeous watery oases.  Stop by, won't you?

What's the weather like where you live?  Does it look like the above photos or more like our Edmonton with snow still prevalent.  By the way, we are forecasted to receive more snow overnight tonight with that system leaving us sometime Friday.  Did I mention how we are all yearning for spring?

This photo was taken in December 2010.  It overlooks the river valley and the Shaw Conference Center of which you can see a small portion on the left hand side.  The river is somewhat frozen and covered in snow though you can see where it runs through horizontally in this photo.

The beautiful Vancouver shoreline in late fall 2010.  In the distance one can see barges and another boat or two.  The trees and shrubs are still green and lush.  Today they have a heavy snowfall but luckily those are few and infrequent.  Dive in and join others exploring the watery wonders of the world.
